The Holidays Are for Good Surprises Only

We love the holiday season here in Wilmette. There is nothing quite like the excitement of finding that perfectly wrapped mystery box under the tree, or the joy of a surprise visit from a loved one.

But let’s be honest: Not all surprises are fun.

Hearing a grinding noise when you hit the brakes on Green Bay Road? That’s a bad surprise. Turning the key on a freezing morning and hearing nothing but a click? That’s the kind of surprise that turns a “Silent Night” into a stressful one.

At Hong Kong Auto Service, our philosophy this season is simple: Leave the surprises for gifts under the tree, and let us take care of the mechanical issues.

Whether you are driving “over the river and through the woods” or just tackling the holiday shopping circuit around the North Shore, here are four mechanical tips to ensure your sleigh runs smoothly.

1. The Gift of Starting: Check Your Battery

The bitter Illinois cold is the number one enemy of car batteries. A battery that worked fine in October can easily fail in December once the temperature drops below freezing.

  • The Fix: If your battery is more than 3 years old, let us test it. We can tell you if it has enough “Cold Cranking Amps” to survive a sub-zero night. It’s better to replace it now on your terms than to be stranded in a parking lot later.

2. Don’t Let Your Tires Be a Mystery

Driving on balding tires in rain or snow isn’t an adventure; it’s a hazard. You need traction to navigate slushy streets and icy driveways safely.

  • The Fix: Try the “Penny Test.” Place a penny into your tire tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread is too low.
  • Pro Tip: Don’t forget to check your tire pressure! Cold air compresses, meaning your tires might be under-inflated right now, killing your gas mileage and handling.

3. Fluids: The Lifeblood of Your Sleigh

Your engine works harder in the winter. Oil thickens in the cold, making it harder for the engine to turn over, and your coolant (antifreeze) helps prevent the engine block from freezing solid.

  • The Fix: Ensure you are due for an oil change and ask us to check the freezing point of your coolant. We will also top off your washer fluid with a winter-rated blend that won’t freeze on your windshield.

4. Brakes: Stop for the Sights (and Safety)

With increased traffic around Old Orchard and downtown Wilmette, your brakes will get a workout. If you hear squealing, grinding, or feel a vibration when stopping, your car is trying to tell you something.

  • The Fix: Don’t ignore the noise. A quick inspection now can save you from a much more expensive rotor repair later—and ensure you can stop safely on slick roads.
